Paccar MX-13 Engine

Kenworth Truck Co., a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, has announced the availability of a California Air Resources Board (CARB)-compliant version of the Paccar MX-13 diesel engine for its T680, T880, and W990 Class 8 trucks. This new engine option caters to stricter emission regulations being implemented in California and other states.

Meeting Stringent Emission Standards

The CARB-compliant MX-13 engine is designed to meet California's ambitious goal of a 90% reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared to current diesel engines. These regulations apply to model year 2024 and later medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines.

Enhanced Performance and Availability

"Our customers are looking for solutions to navigate evolving regulations," said Kevin Haygood, Kenworth's Assistant General Manager for Sales and Marketing. "Kenworth models equipped with the CARB-compliant MX-13 engine deliver excellent performance and fuel economy while complying with stringent emission standards."

Orders for the new engine are now open, with production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024. The CARB-compliant MX-13 comes in two power options: 510 horsepower with 1,850 lb-ft of torque and 455 horsepower with 1,650 lb-ft of torque.

Engineering Advancements for Cleaner Emissions

To achieve CARB compliance, the MX-13 engine incorporates several key modifications:

  • Redesigned pistons, crankshaft, and fuel injectors
  • All-new exhaust after-treatment system

These advancements ensure the engine meets California's stricter emission standards without sacrificing performance.

A Collaborative Effort for Clean Transportation

The introduction of the CARB-compliant MX-13 engine aligns with the Clean Truck Partnership initiative. Launched in July 2023, this partnership involves CARB, the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (including Paccar), and major truck and engine manufacturers. The initiative establishes timelines for introducing cleaner technologies that meet California's emission regulations.

Nationwide Implications

While primarily designed for California, the CARB-compliant MX-13 engine caters to a broader trend. Several states are expected to adopt California's regulations over the next few years, including:

  • Massachusetts and Oregon (2025)
  • New York, Vermont, and Washington (2026)
  • Four additional states (2027)

This new engine option positions Kenworth to support customers operating in these regions with compliant and efficient solutions.

By offering the CARB-compliant MX-13 engine, Kenworth demonstrates its commitment to cleaner transportation technologies while maintaining the power and performance that customers expect.
